When is an immediate denture used?
If you are having several or just one tooth extracted and will need a denture, you can choose to have an immediate denture. With this option, you can have the denture premade and inserted “immediately” on the same day of your extractions.
All of the appointments necessary to make the denture are complete before the extraction date. This allows you to resume your active life without the embarrassment or concern of not having teeth during the healing period.
As your mouth heals, bone, and tissues shrink, and the denture will require re-fitting and adjustments to ensure a proper fit.
Post Insertion Care
It is essential to follow the postoperative instructions of your denturist or Oral Surgeon very carefully.
As healing occurs, the oral tissues shrink, so the denture becomes ill-fitting and loose. It is necessary to re-fit and adjust the denture as the mouth changes. A temporary liner or tissue conditioner is fit in the denture, maintaining fit and comfort. This procedure is repeated over several months as the bone and tissue continue to change and heal; however, the rate of change decreases with time.
This is a natural occurrence, which is to be expected. After the healing process is complete, your dentures will be relined or rebased to ensure the most comfortable fit possible.
Your denturist will recommend the option that best meets your needs.
